Monster

Oil on canvas, 12×16 inches (31x40cm)
2019
Original available for purchase

One of two paintings I created for Halloween 2019. They illustrate my favorite horror film creature, Frankenstein’s monster, one of the greatest sympathetic creations in all imagining.

The term “monster” applies to Frankenstein’s creation but there is much more to him than mere mindless menace. Mary Shelley’s original novel describes him as being well educated and spoken, possessing superhuman strength, endurance and speed. The movie dumbs him down drastically but retains his tragedy and his humanity, following a common trope of portraying humans as the real monsters.

The 1931 black-and-white original movie is the classic; none of the following productions compare.

Both of my paintings are oil on gallery-wrapped canvas, 12×16 inches (31x40cm). The first is titled “Monster”, attempting to highlight his confused humanity. The second is “Malice”, showing his darker side, filled with purposeful intent.

Contact me if you are interested in purchasing one or both.
