Alma was a prophet and chief judge of his people in the Western Hemisphere about a century before Christ was born. He was expelled from the city of Ammonihah for trying to help the people there. He returned to the city and was found by Amulek, an influential man who helped him in many ways.
Later, both men again spoke to the people, turning many hearts and minds to God. But the city leaders arrested, imprisoned and tortured the two, forcing them to watch as they burned their followers alive. Eventually, Alma and Amulek rose in the power of God and destroyed those wicked leaders.
Amulek had lost many friends, his livelihood, and nearly his life – and likely his wife and children – trying to help Alma turn people to God. After many horrific challenges, the two temporarily retired to Alma’s home, where Alma ministered to him. This rarely-discussed followup to an immensely tragic story resonates with our needs today.
You can read the whole story in the book of Alma in The Book of Mormon chapters 8-15, especially 15:18. In that verse, their joint recovery is only hinted at, but that hint is heartrending. Their time together helped heal both and they later returned to the ministry where, despite many more struggles, they helped change many more lives for the best.
Alma and Amulek had done all that God asked of them. God’s grace was sufficient to heal them, in the midst of their challenges and afterward. The same applies to all of us, if we will do what we can.
